The newly released Oracle VM Server for SPARC 2.0 runs on all supported SPARC T-Series servers (i.e. T2, T2 Plus & T3 based platforms), including the just-announced SPARC T3 systems and is fully qualified on the T3-1 server. The complete details can be found in the official product documentation. As qualification activities are completed, support will be announced for the other SPARC servers.

The scheduled transition from Oracle Global Customer Support to My Oracle Support, set for later in 2010, will enable Sun customers and partners to take full advantage of the functionality available to all Oracle Support customers. At the time of the migration, legacy Sun applications - including the Member Support Center (MSC), SunSolve, and Email Center - will be retired, and Oracle's standard support processes implemented. (OpenSFS), backed by Cray, Data Direct Networks, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is the adoptive entity. The organization's mission is to bring together the stakeholders for high-end scalable file systems and provide a formal structure for moving the associated software forward, Feldman writes.

An Oracle Critical Patch Update (including Sun products) and an Oracle Java SE and Java for Business Critical Patch Update were released on October 12, 2010. Oracle strongly recommends applying the patches for these as soon as possible. The Critical Patch Update Advisories are the starting point for relevant information, as they include the list of products affected, pointers to obtain the patches, summaries of the security vulnerabilities for each product suite, and links to other important documents. Oracle will issue Security Alerts for vulnerability fixes deemed too critical to wait for distribution in the next Critical Patch Update.

With as many as 36 system releases and 8,000 IT changes per year, a client-server model for GM's OnStar system was not consistent with management's plans to offer more services and move into new markets. GM chose Oracle's SOA Suite, which features a business rules engine, a BPEL engine, an enterprise service bus, and monitoring and management tools to replace the legacy infrastructure. Writing in Profit Online Tara Swords reports GM's savings of 40 percent or so in application development and deployment costs and about 45 percent reduction in ongoing sustained costs.
